Please Forgive Me

Please forgive me
for I could not save you,
I'm so sorry mom
I only wish that you knew.

You were always here for me
right there by my side,
And your loving devotion
remains even though you have died.

Every time I was sick
you never left my side,
You were right there beside me
my protector and my guide.

It broke my heart
to see you lying in bed so frail,
And I promised myself
that I would never fail.

But I could not make you better
I could not make you feel less afraid,
Oh mother of mine
that was one promise I should never have made!

Please forgive me
for having failed you,
For Alzheimer's remained your "executioner"
no matter what I tried to do.
